From Rave to Rae-Ee-Boo

레이브(Rave)는 1980~90년대 영국에서, 이민자 공동체가 차별과 사회적 억압 속에서도 함께 모여 음악에 춤추고 자유를 표현하며 만들어낸 문화입니다. 한국의 민속문화 역시 왕정과 신분질서 속에서도 민중들이 자유를 찾으며 발전했고, 식민지 시대와 한국전쟁이라는 격동의 역사 속에서도 공동체를 유지하게 한 힘이었습니다.

고된 삶에서 맺힌 한을 흥과 신명으로 풀며 나아가던 선조들의 정서는 레이브와 맞닿아 있습니다. 래이부는 이 지점에서 출발해, 함께 모여 자유롭게 춤추는 공동체적 경험을 현대의 음악·공간·퍼포먼스로 재설계합니다.

Rave emerged in 1980s–90s Britain, born when immigrant communities — facing discrimination and social pressure — gathered to dance, celebrate music, and express freedom. Korean folk culture followed a strikingly similar path: through monarchy, colonization and war, ordinary people found freedom and held communities together through music and performance.

That same longing for freedom, and the inclusive, communal joy carried by Korea's ancestors, is what Korean Rave builds on — redesigning it for today through music, space and performance.

이러한 관점에서 Rave를 來(올 래) · 怡(기쁠 이) · 裒(모을 부)로 풀어 이름을 붙였습니다 — 함께 모여, 기쁘게, 오다.

Building on this shared ground, we layered the name with 來 (Rae, to come) · 怡 (Ee, to be happy) · 裒 (Boo, to gather) — to come, to be happy, to gather.

래이부는 전통을 단순히 보존하는 데 그치지 않고, 진정으로 즐기고 향유하는 문화를 만들어 나가는 것을 목표로 합니다. 과거와 현재가 만나는 공간, 음악과 움직임, 그리고 공동의 에너지를 통해서 말입니다.

Our goal is to create a distinctive culture in which tradition is not just preserved, but genuinely enjoyed and experienced anew — a space where past and present converge through music, movement, and collective energy.

Korean Rave presents an immersive, tradition-based total art form that merges the performative dimension of a concert with the horizontality of a festival. In this festival of all arts — created jointly by a range of creators — audiences come to genuinely enjoy Korean tradition and awaken a sense of collective oneness.

앉아서 보는 전통을 넘어서

Beyond Seated Tradition

한국의 음악은 원초적 에너지와 공동체성, 대동(大同)의 향수를 일깨웁니다. 래이부는 이를 소재로서 차용하는 것이 아니라 원리로 해석하여, 관중과 진정으로 호흡하는 새로운 전통연희를 제공합니다.

전통음악과 연희는 종종 앉아서 감상하는 형식으로 소비되지만, 본래 민속음악과 연희의 성격은 마당과 길 위에서 사람들과 호흡하고 움직임과 참여를 통해 완성되는 데 있습니다. 래이부는 관객이 자유롭게 움직이고 참여할 수 있는 현장을 만듭니다.

Traditional music evokes a raw, primal energy — a sense of oneness. Korean Rave does not treat these qualities merely as material to borrow. We interpret them as underlying principles, offering a new form of traditional performance that genuinely breathes together with its audience.

Traditional music and performance are often consumed in a seated, passive format — yet their original nature lived in open courtyards and streets, completed through participation. Korean Rave creates space and time where everyone can move and participate freely.
